The Y Bwthyn Specialist Palliative Care Unit was developed in 1994 on the site of the 100 year old Pontypridd Cottage Hospital, and is also the base for the home care (Macmillan) nurses who serve the population of Rhondda and Taff Ely. Although the quality of care provided by the staff at Y Bwthyn is considered to be excellent, there are various concerns about the existing facility due to the age of the hospital building and its isolated position.

Due to this and other physical deficiencies of the existing site, it was decided to relocate the service in to a new state of the art purpose-built unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital Campus. The New 8 single bed IPU development includes a Day Unit, Therapy suites, and will also house the Patient Support Services.

Working collaboratively with the project team, our in-house design team solved the issue of both shading and privacy, by engineering and installed Perforated Aluminium Brise Soleil bays from a bespoke perforated Aluminium plate, and bespoke bracketry which were fixed directly to the Gluelam beam structures throughout the project.
