This project was the largest Passivhaus development in London containing 30 family homes over four blocks. One of the main aims was to make use of the most innovative methods of construction to make sustainable living available to those on all incomes. Passivhaus buildings have very high levels of insulation and very low air leakage. The homes make use of energy sources from inside such as body heat from the residence and solar gain from the windows to heat the rooms.
Therefore these building methods required solar shading on the south and south-west facing windows to control this solar heat gain and the levels of daylight. The shutters were the perfect soloution as the home owners are able to open the shutters during the winter months to maximise the solar heat gains and close the shutters during the sunny summer days to shade the window.
